Abstract

The blanket is the fusion plant's nuclear engine room. It surrounds the plasma to absorb neutron energy, breed tritium from lithium, remove high-grade heat, shield magnets and structures, confine radioactive material, and support a replaceable first wall. These functions compete for volume and neutrons. Ports and gaps reduce breeding; more structure displaces breeder; stronger multiplication can add toxicity or activation; higher temperature improves conversion but accelerates corrosion and tritium permeation. I define tritium breeding ratio as a measured plant margin rather than a neutronics score and compare solid ceramic and liquid breeder families. The reference architecture uses modular sectors, reduced-activation structure, dedicated extraction, permeation control, redundant cooling isolation, and instrumented test volumes whose material balance can be closed.

The neutron carries both product and obligation

Each deuterium-tritium reaction releases one 14.1 MeV14.1\ \mathrm{MeV} neutron. The neutron escapes magnetic confinement and enters the blanket. There it scatters, deposits heat, changes nuclei, and may react with lithium to create tritium.

Two breeding reactions establish the basis:

6Li+n→4He+3H+4.8 MeV,{}^{6}\mathrm{Li}+n\rightarrow{}^{4}\mathrm{He}+{}^{3}\mathrm{H}+4.8\ \mathrm{MeV}, 7Li+n→4He+3H+n′−2.5 MeV.{}^{7}\mathrm{Li}+n\rightarrow{}^{4}\mathrm{He}+{}^{3}\mathrm{H}+n'-2.5\ \mathrm{MeV}.

Lithium-6 has a strong breeding reaction, including with moderated neutrons. Lithium-7 requires energetic neutrons and returns a neutron, which can support the overall economy. Multipliers such as beryllium or lead can increase neutron availability through secondary reactions.

Breeding ratio needs operating margin

The tritium breeding ratio is

TBR=NT,producedNT,burned.\mathrm{TBR}=\frac{N_{T,\mathrm{produced}}}{N_{T,\mathrm{burned}}}.

A value barely above one is not self-sufficiency. The plant loses tritium through radioactive decay, processing inefficiency, leakage, waste, retention in surfaces, assay uncertainty, and inventory trapped in equipment. A growing fleet also needs startup inventory for the next machine.

I define an effective margin

MT=M˙T,recovered−M˙T,burned−M˙T,loss−M˙T,growth.M_T=\dot M_{T,\mathrm{recovered}}-\dot M_{T,\mathrm{burned}}-\dot M_{T,\mathrm{loss}}-\dot M_{T,\mathrm{growth}}.

The margin must remain positive over outages and changing blanket condition. Neutronics calculations estimate production. Only an operating extraction and accountancy system can demonstrate recovery.

Ports, penetrations, divertor openings, module gaps, structural ribs, coolant pipes, and diagnostic channels displace breeder or leak neutrons. Three-dimensional as-built geometry matters. A simplified continuous blanket can overstate TBR.

Solid and liquid breeders distribute difficulty differently

Ceramic breeder concepts use lithium-bearing pebbles or blocks, often with beryllium multiplier and helium purge gas. They offer a contained solid inventory and can separate coolant from breeder. Pebble-bed thermomechanics, contact conductance, cracking, swelling, purge flow, dust, and tritium release need control.

Liquid breeders use lithium-containing liquids such as lead-lithium. The fluid can combine breeder and multiplier functions and carry tritium toward extraction. It introduces magnetohydrodynamic pressure drop, corrosion, free-surface or leak behavior, activation products, polonium concerns in lead systems, and permeation.

No family is mature enough to accept on reputation. ITER’s test blanket module program exists to expose representative concepts to an actual fusion environment. A power plant needs longer duration, larger area, complete heat extraction, and closed tritium accounting.

Magnetohydrodynamics can dominate liquid flow

An electrically conducting liquid moving through magnetic field experiences induced current and Lorentz force:

J=σ(−∇ϕ+v×B),f=J×B.\mathbf{J}=\sigma(-\nabla\phi+\mathbf{v}\times\mathbf{B}), \qquad \mathbf{f}=\mathbf{J}\times\mathbf{B}.

The force can resist motion and increase pressure drop. Electrically insulating coatings or flow-channel inserts can reduce current paths, but they must survive radiation, thermal cycling, stress, chemistry, and defects. A small coating crack may create a local current concentration and invalidate an ideal model.

Pumping power becomes part of net plant output. Flow geometry must also avoid stagnant regions where tritium and corrosion products accumulate.

Tritium must leave the breeder quickly

In solid breeders, tritium diffuses from grains, enters purge gas, and flows to extraction. Temperature affects release: too low and inventory grows; too high and material or structure may exceed limits. In liquids, tritium dissolves, migrates, and permeates through metal boundaries. Extraction technologies may use gas-liquid contactors, membranes, getters, cold traps, or electrochemical methods depending on chemistry.

Residence time sets inventory:

MT≈M˙T,productionτres.M_T\approx\dot M_{T,\mathrm{production}}\tau_{\mathrm{res}}.

At a production rate of 0.15 kg/day0.15\ \mathrm{kg/day}, reducing average residence from ten days to one day reduces associated breeder and process inventory from about 1.5 kg1.5\ \mathrm{kg} to 0.15 kg0.15\ \mathrm{kg}. Lower inventory improves startup, safety, and accountancy.

Permeation barriers can keep tritium out of coolant and the balance of plant, but their defect tolerance and lifetime need evidence. Recovery systems must process both intended extraction streams and unintended permeation.

Heat and structure close the same geometry

About eighty percent of fusion energy begins in neutrons. Nuclear heating is volumetric and varies through the blanket. Cooling channels must limit armor, breeder, multiplier, structure, and outlet temperatures under normal and off-normal conditions.

Temperature windows are narrow. Structural materials may embrittle below one threshold and creep above another. Ceramic release improves with temperature. Corrosion and permeation also rise. Thermal conversion wants a hot outlet, while material lifetime may want less.

Blanket modules carry pressure, electromagnetic loads, gravity, seismic effects, disruption forces, swelling, and thermal gradients. Attachments need enough stiffness to preserve alignment and enough compliance to accommodate expansion. Loads should not pass through delicate coolant or tritium connections.

Shielding protects lifetime components

Neutrons that escape the blanket heat and damage the vacuum vessel, thermal shields, magnets, insulation, electronics, and building. Shielding performance is evaluated with dose, dpa, gas production, heat deposition, and activation for each protected asset.

A small streaming path can dominate local dose. Ports and joints therefore use labyrinths, local shields, and monitored hot spots. Diagnostic performance and maintenance access are purchased with neutron leakage, so every penetration carries a shielding budget.

Instrumentation must close a material balance

Each sector receives inlet and outlet temperature, pressure, flow, chemistry, radiation, leak, permeation, and tritium measurements. Neutron monitors and activation foils help validate the local spectrum. Extracted tritium is compared with predicted production and measured inventory change.

Test modules should be designed as experiments with known boundaries, removable coupons, controlled defects, and post-service examination. A blanket that produces heat without explaining its tritium inventory has not passed.

Figure 2. Tritium self-sufficiency is established by a closed measured loop.

Once neutron energy enters coolant, fusion begins to resemble other thermal power systems. The resemblance is useful but incomplete. Coolant choice, tritium permeation, pulsed operation, decay heat, and large internal electrical loads shape the path from blanket outlet to the grid.
